Iran sentences singer Parastoo Ahmadi, eight others to lashings over performance without hijab
- On Thursday, The Qom Provincial Criminal Court sentenced Iranian singer Parastoo Ahmadi and eight collaborators to 74 lashes, a two-year travel ban, and a two-year artistic prohibition for content broadcast on YouTube.
- Authorities accused the nine artists of producing "obscene and immoral content" after Ahmadi performed without a hijab in December 2024, violating Islamic Penal Code articles regarding public decency and digital morality.
- Prosecutors used Article 638 of the Islamic Penal Code and Article 743 of the Computer Crimes Law to convict the group, though lawyer Mohammad Hadi Jafarpour argued Iranian law does not criminalize women singing.
- Responding to the verdict, Iranian-American journalist Masih Alinejad wrote: "They call America the Great Satan. And then they flew to the table and signed a deal with the 'Devil'. But a woman's voice scared them more than any superpower ever could."
- The group was previously arrested in December 2024 and released on bail; critics describe the sentencing as part of a systemic "apartheid against women" within Iran's current government.
