Iran sentences Nobel laureate Narges Mohammadi to 7 more years in prison
Narges Mohammadi received a prison term plus travel ban and internal exile amid a wider crackdown on dissent following nationwide protests, supporters said.
- On Sunday, supporters said Iran sentenced Narges Mohammadi, Nobel Peace Prize laureate, to over seven more years after a hunger strike; Mostafa Nili confirmed the ruling Saturday by the Revolutionary Court in Mashhad.
- The court ruled that Mohammadi was sentenced to six years for `gathering and collusion`, one and a half years for propaganda, plus a two-year travel ban and two years of internal exile to Khosf, city of internal exile .
- After a medical furlough in December 2024, Mohammadi, who has serious health problems including multiple heart attacks and emergency surgery in 2022, was rearrested in December 2025 at a ceremony honoring Khosrow Alikordi.
- Iran did not immediately acknowledge the sentence, while Nili wrote, `'Considering her illnesses, it is expected that she will be temporarily released on bail so that she can receive treatment.'
- The sentencing also occurred as Iran tightened control after nationwide protests while negotiating with the U.S. over its nuclear programme amid U.S. moves including USS Abraham Lincoln deployment.

The Norwegian Nobel Peace Committee had called on Iran to put an end to "the cruel abuse" suffered by Narges Mohammadi, as well as his immediate release. It had called for it through a communiqué detailing practices of physical and psychological torture against the activist, laureated with the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 and sentenced a few days ago to more than seven years in prison by the Ayatollás regime.
