Iran ready for 'fair' talks with US but not on defence capabilities
Iran insists on excluding its missile and defence capabilities from US talks while regional allies work to prevent a military conflict, says Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
- On Jan 30, Iran's chief diplomat Abbas Araghchi said Iran is ready to resume talks with the United States if they are fair and exclude Iran's defence capabilities, adding no talks are currently arranged.
- In recent weeks, US-Iran tensions rose after a bloody crackdown on protests inside Iran, and U.S. moves including a carrier strike group intensified diplomatic friction over missile programme curbs.
- Warning that a strike would escalate, Abbas Araghchi said Tehran is ready for negotiations or warfare and warned a U.S. attack could exceed a bilateral war, accusing Israel of encouraging U.S. action.
- Regional allies including Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have emphasised reducing tensions, while Tayyip Erdogan, Turkish President, offered Ankara as a facilitator and Hakan Fidan, Turkish Foreign Minister, pledged on Jan 29 to keep channels open with Steve Witkoff, U.S. special envoy.
- Brent crude rose almost 7% to more than $70 a barrel, reflecting war fears, as a U.S. Navy destroyer docked at Eilat, Israel, while President Donald Trump reviewed options without deciding on strikes.
