U.S. intelligence finds Iran retains thousands of missiles, ability to reactivate launchers: WSJ
U.S. officials say about half of Iran’s missile stockpile was lost, but it still has more than 1,000 medium-range missiles.
- The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday that United States intelligence assessments found Iran retains thousands of short- and medium-range ballistic missiles and could retrieve launchers from underground storage sites despite losing roughly half its stockpile.
- Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth claimed on Wednesday the United States achieved a "decisive military victory against Iran," asserting Iran's ballistic missile program was "functionally destroyed" and that leadership had "begged" for the ceasefire.
- Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Dan Caine reported Iran lost 90% of weapon factories and 80% of air defenses; however, United States officials warned that many remaining missile launchers are inoperable yet capable of reactivation.
- American officials expressed concern that Iran may use the current ceasefire to rebuild its arsenal, threatening the Strait of Hormuz, through which 20 percent of global oil traffic passes and where United States forces operate.
- Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated the Strait of Hormuz is "open" and the United States military will be "hanging around" Iran to ensure compliance, though intelligence reports suggest the ceasefire's security gains may prove reversible.
