Iran Executes Two Men Convicted of Membership in Banned Opposition Group

On Monday, Iranian authorities executed Akbar Daneshvarkar, 60, and Mohammad Taghavi-Sangdehi, 59, at Gehzel Hesar prison in Karaj after the Supreme Court confirmed sentences for membership in the outlawed Mujahedeen-e-Khalq.
Mizan claimed the men participated in "terrorist acts" and actions aimed at overthrowing the Islamic Republic; the MEK has been in exile since the 1980s and is designated as a terrorist organization by Tehran.
Norway-Based NGO Iran Human Rights director Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam warned the two were "subjected to physical and psychological torture, denied due process rights and sentenced to death in a process that did not meet minimum fair trial standards."
Maryam Rajavi, leader of the National Council of Resistance of Iran , stated "the desperate clerical regime, in fear of the people's uprising, vainly attempts to delay the explosion of the people's anger for a short while by executing the bravest children of Iran."
Campaign groups expressed fear of a new execution surge as authorities use capital punishment to spread societal fear against the background of the month-long war against the United States and Israel.
