Iran and US hit tankers in biggest wave of attacks on shipping since war began

The IRGC said the strikes targeted two U.S. vessels and eight oil tankers after U.S. forces sank five Iranian tankers.

  • Overnight, several merchant vessels in the northern Gulf and near Oman were hit by disabling fire during military activity, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations reported on Wednesday.
  • On Tuesday, Central Command forces destroyed several Iranian crude oil tankers following attempted missile attacks on a Navy warship over the previous two days.
  • Claiming the area was "prohibited and unsafe," the Revolutionary Guards of Iran reported they attacked several vessels and tankers in response, alleging the 10 ships crossed the Strait of Hormuz.
  • Separately, UKMTO reported an incident Wednesday 24 nautical miles from Port Rashid in the United Arab Emirates, where a vessel appeared to be taking on water after an unknown projectile strike.
  • The British navy-affiliated UKMTO agency said on Wednesday it is unable to confirm any casualties or environmental impacts from the overnight military activity in the region.
