Zebrafish research led by Espin Palazon examined white blood cell creation; organisms develop in 48 hours, allowing the team to investigate why leukemia cells fail to mature into functional immune cells.
By reprogramming specific metabolic genes in genetically modified mice, Ananieva's team reduced tumor growth by as much as 75%, demonstrating how T-cell resiliency can be restored against cancer.
These findings apply to CAR T-cell therapy, where clinicians engineer a patient's blood cells to attack specific cancers, supporting Ananieva's vision for "personalized medicine" tailored to individual patient profiles.
