Apple Confirms iOS 26.3 Privacy Upgrade, But Most iPhones Won’t Get It

iOS 26.3 restricts location data shared with cellular networks to general areas without affecting emergency accuracy or signal quality, available on select Apple modem devices.

  • Yesterday, Apple published a support document introducing iOS 26.3's Limit Precise Location privacy setting, and the iOS 26.3 beta surfaces this option for users.
  • The setting reduces location precision for carriers, letting users limit some information cellular networks use to determine device location; Apple says this does not affect emergency responders or Find My/location sharing.
  • On supported devices, open Settings → Cellular, select a SIM line if more than one, scroll to Limit Precise Location, available on iPhone Air, iPhone 16e, and iPad Pro with Apple C1 or C1X modem, then restart if prompted.
  • Adoption is currently narrow, with Boost Mobile first in the U.S., six carriers confirmed worldwide, and broader rollout depending on carrier adoption and C2 modem availability for iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max in coming months.
  • Apple signaled this could be the first of many modem-exclusive features, as Limit Precise Location remains niche and exclusive to devices with Apple's in‑house modem chips, with carriers adopting it in coming months.
