Investment in AI to Create Thousands of New Jobs – Government
The UK government’s £10 billion investment in South Wales aims to support AI research and skills while creating 5,000 jobs over the next decade, officials said.
- The UK Government announced a new AI Growth Zone in South Wales, backed by £10 billion, spanning the M4 corridor from Newport to Bridgend and expected to create more than 5,000 jobs over the next decade.
- Chancellor Rachel Reeves framed the move as part of growth strategy, calling the fourth AI growth zone a step to unlock growth while ministers said it cements the UK Government’s lead in Europe’s tech sector.
- The plan includes targeted funding: up to 137 million to back scientists and up to 5 million to support business AI adoption and skills, with Vantage Data Centers pledging university partnerships.
- Jo Stevens, Secretary of State for Wales, welcomed the move, while officials said international investor backing was a vote of confidence and noted benefits for Bristol and London.
- Wales will now have two brand-new AI growth zones bringing jobs to both North and South Wales, while universities in South Wales will partner with industry to sustain skilled AI talent.
