An NYC Helicopter that Crashed and Killed 6 Last Year Shows Signs of Bird Strike, NTSB Says
Investigators found geese remains on the wreckage and said helicopters are especially vulnerable to bird strikes because they fly at low altitudes.
On Thursday, The National Transportation Safety Board reported that a bird strike likely caused the April 10, 2025, helicopter crash into the Hudson River, with investigators finding remains of several geese on the wreckage.
Passengers Agustin Escobar, his wife, Camprub Montal, and their three children, Victor, Mercedes, and Agustin, died in the crash alongside pilot Seankese Johnson, a U.S. Navy veteran.
The Federal Aviation Administration noted that a Helicopter is especially vulnerable to bird strikes because they fly at low altitudes, which can be devastating.
Safety concerns prompted New Jersey to request restrictions on nonessential flights in New York City, following reports that at least 38 people have died in local helicopter accidents since 1977.
A 2009 collision over the Hudson River killed nine people, while five died in 2018 when a charter helicopter offering "open door" flights went down into the East River.
