Gardaí Investigating Death of Man in Wheatfield Prison
Investigators are examining whether a bladed weapon was used in the assault, as a post-mortem and homicide inquiry continue.
On Thursday night, August 13, 2026, inmate Brendan Gahan, 39, died at Wheatfield Prison in Dublin after being found unresponsive in a cell he shared with another inmate following an alleged assault.
Gahan, who hailed from Tallaght, was serving a three-year and nine-month sentence after pleading guilty in Dublin to two counts of possession of drugs for sale or supply.
The Irish Prison Service confirmed the death in custody at Wheatfield Prison on August 13, 2026, while Gardai launched an investigation examining whether a bladed weapon was used in the assault.
Investigators requested the Garda National Technical Bureau to process the scene, while the Coroner has been notified and a Family Liaison Officer was assigned to support the deceased's relatives.
Gardai await post-mortem results to determine the investigation's direction, as all deaths in custody are investigated by the Irish Prison Service and the Inspector of Prisons where circumstances warrant.
