FBI Warning—Do Not Install This App On Your PC Or Smartphone
NORTH AMERICA AND EUROPE, JUL 22 – The Interlock ransomware group uses a double extortion tactic targeting businesses and critical infrastructure, with 50 victims documented since September 2024, federal agencies report.
- The FBI and Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency issued a joint advisory today warning of Interlock ransomware threats across North America and Europe, supported by HHS and MS-ISAC, and warned Tuesday of targeting critical infrastructure and businesses.
- Earlier this month, the group adopted the FileFix technique to drop remote access trojan malware, enhancing their attack methods, as the FBI and CISA warned.
- Using FileFix, attackers weaponize Windows File Explorer and HTML Applications . The FBI observed initial access via drive-by downloads from compromised websites, the advisory says.
- The group claimed responsibility for stealing 1.5 terabytes from DaVita, while hacking Kettering Health, and Cyble threat intelligence researchers reported 13 victims in June.
- Implement DNS filtering and web access firewalls, the agencies said, and train users to recognize social engineering attempts.
