Interim Chief Constable has contract extended

DEVON & CORNWALL POLICE JURISDICTION, UNITED KINGDOM, AUG 8 – James Vaughan will lead Devon & Cornwall Police until January 2027, providing stability after leadership challenges while a permanent chief recruitment is planned for summer 2026.

  • Recently, Interim Chief Constable James Vaughan agreed to stay in the top role for another 16 months, with Commissioner Alison Hernandez extending his contract to January 2027.
  • Following his suspension shortly after joining Devon & Cornwall Police in 2023 over allegations he denies, Chief Constable Will Kerr retired after the PPS decided not to prosecute this year.
  • Recently, Devon & Cornwall Police was removed from special measures by His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services, and Hernandez welcomed Vaughan’s leadership changes.
  • Recently, Deputy Chief Constable Jim Colwell returned to his substantive role after a written warning for breaching the force’s notifiable associations policy by messaging a journalist.
  • The process to recruit a substantive Chief Constable is planned to begin in the summer of next year, and Vaughan expressed confidence that the force will continue to improve services across Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.
