Inside the US race for drone delivery dominance
The pilot is part of a broader push by retailers to scale drone deliveries and speed last-mile fulfillment.
In 2021, Dexa CEO Beth Flippo launched a Kroger drone delivery pilot in Ohio to test automated grocery logistics in suburban markets.
Flippo relocated her family from New Jersey to Ohio in 2021, where she was tapped to run the drone delivery program for the grocer.
The initiative concluded after eight months, as Flippo admitted the venture failed to generate profit. "We couldn't make any money," she said.
Major retailers including Walmart and Amazon are currently scaling drone fleets, though strict federal regulations requiring visual line-of-sight often limit operational efficiency.
Industry experts suggest that as drone hardware, battery life, and range improve, rapid aerial delivery will eventually become commercially viable.
