New 'Little House' Series Explores Complicated History but Keeps Heart, Community at the Center
Rebecca Sonnenshine says the adaptation centers on family, community and kindness as it brings Laura Ingalls Wilder’s books to a new generation.
On Thursday, July 9, Netflix premieres season 1 of "Little House on the Prairie", a new adaptation grounded in the semi-autobiographical book series by Laura Ingalls Wilder.
Showrunner Rebecca Sonnenshine aims to align this series with the original books rather than the 1970s NBC classic, focusing on the Ingalls family's early homesteading journey.
Filmed in Manitoba, the production faced extreme weather including tornadoes and floods, while cast members Alice Halsey as Laura and Luke Bracey as Charles developed their roles.
Emphasizing themes of kindness and community, the production has secured a second season renewal from Netflix, which is currently shooting in Manitoba.
Despite literary acclaim, the American Library Association removed Wilder's name from a children's award in 2018, citing concerns over "anti-Native and anti-Black sentiments" in her writing.
