NCP (SP) to Join NDA only as Part of a ‘Unified NCP’: BJP Tells Mahayuti Allies
BJP leaders say the Sharad Pawar faction can enter the alliance only after merging with Ajit Pawar’s camp, as talks continue over parliamentary numbers.
On Friday, BJP leadership conveyed to the Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party that it must merge with the Ajit Pawar-led NCP to join the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance at the Centre and in Maharashtra.
Following the 2023 party split, the two Nationalist Congress Party factions hold 9 Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra, with the Sharad Pawar-led faction commanding 8 seats and the Ajit Pawar-led NCP holding 1.
A Mahayuti insider noted that the BJP's 'Madhav' support base, consisting of OBC Mali, Dhangar, and Vanjari communities, clashes with the NCP's Maratha base, making direct merger unacceptable, though an alliance remains feasible.
Internal tensions surfaced within the Ajit Pawar-led NCP after party vice-president Udaykumar Aher urged Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar to recommend Rajya Sabha MP Parth Pawar for a Union Cabinet berth.
Sources indicated that a final decision regarding the Sharad Pawar-led NCP's potential entry into the NDA could be reached within the next 8 to 15 days, pending further discussions among the involved factions.
The excitement over the merger of the two factions of NCP in Maharashtra is intensifying. According to sources, the BJP wants the two groups to merge first, then they will be included in the NDA. The main reason for this is the Delimitation Bill, for which the support of nine NCP SP parliamentarians is considered necessary.
