Tinubu to declare National Security Conference open in Abuja
The conference will bring leaders and security experts together to discuss banditry, kidnapping and a funding plan of N1bn monthly from each northern state.
- On Tuesday, President Bola Tinubu will open the National Security Conference in Abuja to address regional security challenges. Garbadeen Mohammad, spokesperson for JIBWIS and the World Muslim League, announced the event on Sunday.
- Northern Nigeria has been the hotbed of 70 per cent of all insecurity in the country for over two decades, with religious insurgency, banditry, and communal clashes decimating lives and livelihoods across the region.
- To address these threats, the Northern States Governors' Forum established the Northern Nigeria Security Trust Fund last month, with 19 states committing N1bn monthly, totaling N19bn monthly or about N228bn annually.
- Discussions will focus on banditry, kidnapping, and religious unity, though concerns persist regarding the 21-member Board of Trustees, which leans heavily on retired military and police officers.
- Individual states cannot adequately handle these cross-border threats alone, making regional leadership essential. Stakeholders aim to exchange ideas and strengthen partnerships, advancing sustainable socio-economic development across the Nigerian federation.
