Calgary to House Quantum Defence Hub to Develop Tech for Armed Forces
Ottawa will fund the hub for quantum sensing, communications, algorithms and hardware to support Canadian Armed Forces needs.
- On Thursday, Federal Defence Minister David McGuinty announced $20.3 million in federal funding to establish a quantum research hub at the University of Calgary, enhancing Canada's military capabilities through quantum technologies.
- Researchers will develop quantum technologies to redefine navigation when GPS is denied and secure contested communications. "Quantum technologies will fundamentally change how nations will defend themselves," McGuinty said.
- The project joins a growing network of Defense Innovation Secure Hubs, or DISH, marking the third federal initiative of its kind alongside maritime security research in Halifax and drone technology development in Montreal.
- Since 2020, 130 faculty members at UCalgary have led over 1,100 defence-aligned research projects spanning Arctic security, autonomous systems, and health diagnostics, according to UCalgary president and vice chancellor Dr. Edward McCauley.
- Investing in domestic quantum capacity positions Canada to lead emerging defence fields while strengthening economic resilience, McGuinty said, as these technologies will define the next generation of military capability amid shifting geopolitical risks.
