For the first time in the history of Estonian nature conservation, in addition to an animal, soil and fish, an insect was also chosen as the year of the year, which turned out to be the great aspen beetle (Saperda carcharias). However, the species associated with aspen trees highlights a clear contradiction between human economic interests and the wishes of natural biodiversity.
