Inquiry launched as governments spar over oil project
The review will examine whether the 2025 reforms are raising compliance costs and delaying approvals for major Queensland projects.
- On Monday, Treasurer David Janetzki announced the Queensland Productivity Commission will conduct a 12-month inquiry into federal environmental law impacts, investigating compliance costs and delays for Queensland businesses.
- This inquiry follows Premier David Crisafulli's public calls for federal fast-tracking of an oil industry at the Taroom Trough, a 750-square-kilometre tenement about 300 kilometres west of Brisbane, which he described as a "generational opportunity."
- Federal Environment Minister Murray Watt accused the Queensland government of chasing headlines, stating the federal government had yet to receive details about the Taroom proposal.
- "One of the key ways we can speed up approvals is for state governments to sign bilateral agreements with us to let approvals happen simultaneously," Senator Watt told AAP, noting Queensland had not yet come to the table.
- Reforms passed in December were overdue, Senator Watt said, noting "this was the first time national environmental laws had been updated in more than 25 years" while the inquiry proceeds.
