Teenagers Drowned in River Wear After Car Plunged Into Water, Inquest Hears
A coroner will examine the crash after a 17-year-old survivor was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
On Monday, Sunderland senior coroner David Place opened inquests into the deaths of Jackson Duke, 17, and 16-year-olds Luke Etheridge and Zara Shaw, who died when an Audi A3 plunged into the River Wear on September 29.
Post-Mortem examinations indicated the provisional cause of death for all three teenagers was "consistent with drowning," Place said during City Hall hearings adjourned until January 21 next year.
Coroner's officer Vicky Ross reported that one of the vehicle's four occupants "self-extricated," but the other three "tragically could not" and were discovered later by divers inside the Audi.
Northumbria Police confirmed the circumstances are subject to an ongoing investigation, and a 17-year-old boy who escaped the crash was released on bail after arrest on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
On Saturday, Sunderland AFC fans and players paid tribute to Jackson, Luke, and Zara with a minute's applause at the Stadium of Light, as Place described it "a tragic loss for the whole of the city.
