Club knew Maddy Cusack had issues with coach, inquest hears
The club’s head of football administration said Morgan was transparent about past difficulties with Cusack, as the inquest examines what officials knew before hiring him.
The inquest into Maddy Cusack's death was adjourned again after new documents were lodged at Chesterfield Coroner's Court. The proceedings, investigating the 27-year-old's September 20, 2023 death in Derbyshire, began June 29.
Sheffield United officials knew midfielder Cusack had issues with her former coach, Jonathan Morgan, before hiring him as women's team manager. Morgan previously worked with Cusack at Leicester City, where they experienced professional difficulties.
Former general manager Zoe Johnson stated in an email that Morgan "doesn't have the greatest reputation in the game." Testimony also revealed Morgan allegedly made comments about Cusack's "bottom heavy" build and her relationship with teammate Grace Riglar.
Cusack's mother, Deborah, described Morgan as her daughter's "nemesis," alleging he made comments to "cut her down to size" and "be in control." Within a week of her death, the family submitted a formal complaint to the club detailing these issues.
Morgan denied calling Cusack a "psycho" during the inquest proceedings. The court continues examining these allegations amid scrutiny of Sheffield United's oversight, with the investigation focused on the impact of his coaching style and management practices.
