Injured cruise ship worker airlifted off vessel by 19 Wing Comox
The injured crew member was airlifted to Comox after a coordinated rescue involving two Royal Canadian Air Force aircraft and medical personnel.
- On Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2026, the Royal Canadian Air Force's 442 Transport and Rescue Squadron medevaced an injured crew member from a cruise ship 182 km northwest of Port Hardy, Vancouver Island.
- The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre Victoria tasked the squadron, which maintains primary aviation and marine response for the "Victoria search and rescue region " covering 920,000 square kilometers of B.C. and Yukon.
- Two aircraft, a CH-149 Cormorant and a CC-295 Kingfisher , responded to the ship; the Kingfisher arrived first to coordinate with the captain while the Cormorant lowered two technicians to hoist the patient.
- After hoisting the injured crew member and medical personnel, the Cormorant flew to Comox, where the team transferred the patient to a waiting Emergency Health Services helicopter for further medical care.
- Based at 19 Wing Comox, the 442 Transport and Rescue Squadron maintains a staff of roughly 200 members, including pilots, navigators, flight engineers, and search and rescue technicians.
