City of Kamloops, TNRD Secure $7M Each From Ottawa to Fund Major Projects
The project aims to turn wastewater residuals into biochar that can store carbon for hundreds of years, officials said.
- On Thursday, Victoria MP Will Greaves, Esquimalt-Colwood MLA Darlene Rotchford, and Sidney Mayor and CRD Chair Cliff McNeil-Smith announced the Capital Regional District received $7 million in federal funding to transform wastewater biosolids into biochar.
- Using new carbonization technology, the facility will transform biosolids leftover from wastewater treatment into biochar, a product capable of capturing and storing carbon for hundreds of years to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
- The grant is part of $152 million Ottawa is sending to British Columbia from the Strategic Priorities Fund, which includes more than $32 million for infrastructure projects across Vancouver Island.
- McNeil-Smith said the initiative positions the CRD as a national leader in biosolids management and resource recovery, though detailed plans and budget specifics will not be presented to the board until 2027.
- At the Hartland Landfill, the project could operate within the current footprint, requiring no significant site changes, according to McNeil-Smith, who noted it would not be enormous.
