Summer Cookouts Cost Nearly $3 More This Holiday than Last Year
The annual American Farm Bureau Federation survey says proteins rose across the board, while canned pork and beans posted the biggest increase.
The American Farm Bureau Federation reports a 10-person summer cookout costs $73.82, the highest price since the survey began in 2016, marking a $2.90 increase from 2025.
Cookout proteins increased across the board, with ground beef rising 5.5% to $14.06 for 2 pounds, while higher aluminum prices and frost damage drove overall cost growth.
The National Farmers Union report shows farmers receive just under $0.12 for every $1 consumers spend on food, with beef offering farmers the greatest share of the dollar.
National Farmers Union President Rob Larew called for "structural reforms" to support family farmers, while Farm Bureau President Brent Johnson said farmers are "price takers" needing risk management tools.
Accounting for inflation, the 2026 cookout is cheaper by more than $1.50 than the 2016 cookout, as the 4% increase from last summer matches the pace of inflation.
