- On Monday, Indonesian authorities detained a 22-year-old Malaysian man identified only as "DI" in Surabaya after discovering 990g of crystal methamphetamine and 1,089 ecstasy pills attached to his body.
- This follows the arrest of a 39-year-old Malaysian pilot last week at Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, where authorities seized more than 70,000 ecstasy tablets in his suitcase.
- Separately, the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority reported officers arrested a 22-year-old Malaysian man at the Woodlands Checkpoint on August 1 for attempting to smuggle 8.646kg of cannabis and 1.569kg of methamphetamine into Singapore.
- Both Southeast Asian nations maintain strict anti-drug laws, and those convicted of smuggling these quantities of narcotics may face the death penalty.
- Central Narcotics Bureau officers continue investigating the Singapore case, while Indonesia maintains a moratorium on executions despite having some of the world's toughest anti-drug laws.
