IndiGo Faces India Antitrust Scrutiny After Mass Flight ...
The Competition Commission of India is investigating IndiGo's dominant 65% market share for possible abuse after over 1,600 flights were canceled, stranding thousands.
- The CCI has taken cognisance and will probe IndiGo's network-wide disruption earlier this month to assess competition rule violations.
- The DGCA said IndiGo admitted pilot shortages and misjudged the Flight Duty Time Limitation second phase that took effect on November 1, receiving a temporary exemption till February 10.
- On December 5, over 1,600 of IndiGo's 2,300-plus daily flights were cancelled, stranding thousands of passengers and affecting over 950 of around 1,200 domestic routes.
- Alongside the Competition Commission of India , a Directorate General of Civil Aviation inquiry is under way; the CCI can order formal investigation and penalties up to 10 per cent of average turnover.
- Industry insiders note IndiGo's 65 per cent market share, and experts warn the crisis highlights market concentration risks like systemic failure and fewer choices.
