Indictments show five inmate murders, assaults and other violence at a Tennessee prison
The indictments include five inmate murder cases and charges of rape, kidnapping and official misconduct, according to District Attorney Danny H. Goodman Jr.
The Lake County grand jury returned 50 indictments across 19 cases involving violent acts at Northwest Correctional Complex, District Attorney Danny Goodman announced on Tuesday.
Violence within The Tennessee Department of Correction has increased significantly in recent years, prompting charges related to inmates killed in multiple incidents throughout 2025 and 2026.
Eight people were indicted for first-degree murder on Aug. 12, 2025, while six faced charges tied to an Oct. 8, 2025 death. Two former employees were indicted for assault and official misconduct.
Other indictments include charges of especially aggravated rape, especially aggravated kidnapping, attempted murder, and assaults on correctional staff. Goodman is withholding defendants' names until all are arrested or formally notified.
The Tennessee Department of Correction did not respond to requests for information about the indictments. Goodman said his office will continue prosecuting these cases to ensure prison safety for staff and inmates.
