The Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor will reduce travel time to 2 hours 17 minutes with trains running up to 320 km/h using Japan's Shinkansen technology.
- Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in New Delhi announced India’s first bullet train will begin phased operations on August 15, 2027.
- Launched in 2017, the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High Speed Rail project missed its December 2023 deadline due to land acquisition and other implementation issues, officials said.
- Spanning over 508 km, the line is designed for speeds up to 320 kmph, with the inaugural run covering 100 km between Surat and Vapi, replacing the original 50 km Surat–Billimora plan.
- After full commissioning, the line will cut end-to-end travel to about 2 hours and 17 minutes and include 12 stations with connectivity and integration features.
- Using Japan's Shinkansen technology, the project includes a 7 km undersea tunnel near Thane Creek and 85 route km of mainline viaduct with ongoing tunnelling, aiming for world-class high-speed rail standards.
