India's Bold Leap: Portal Launch for Electric Vehicle Manufacturing Scheme
- On June 24, 2025, the Ministry of Heavy Industries inaugurated the online platform to receive proposals under the initiative aimed at boosting the production of electric passenger vehicles within India.
- The scheme was notified on March 15, 2024, and detailed guidelines were issued on June 2, 2025, to attract global and domestic electric vehicle manufacturers.
- The portal, accessible at spmepci.heavyindustries.gov.in, invites eligible applicants committing a minimum Rs 4,150 crore investment and meeting domestic value addition targets.
- Approved applicants are eligible to bring in electric four-wheelers as fully assembled units with a CIF price threshold starting at USD 35,000, benefiting from a reduced customs duty rate of 15% for a duration of five years following approval.
- This scheme aims to position India as a global EV manufacturing hub, generate employment, and support national goals including Net Zero by 2070 and 'Make in India'.
