Suspect Killed, Indiana Trooper Injured in I-80/94 Shooting in Hammond
A trooper was shot in the chest and is expected to recover after a minor traffic stop escalated into an officer-involved gunfight.
An Indiana State Police trooper was shot and a 34-year-old suspect was killed just after midnight Tuesday during a traffic stop on eastbound I-80/94 in Hammond, Indiana, near the Illinois-Indiana state line.
The trooper initiated the stop for a minor traffic violation and called for emergency backup after holding the vehicle's two occupants at gunpoint; the driver produced a handgun as officers approached, prompting an exchange of gunfire.
All four responding officers—the state trooper, two Lake County Sheriff's deputies, and a Hammond police officer—fired their weapons during the gunfire exchange; the trooper sustained a chest wound but was protected by a bulletproof vest, while the 34-year-old female passenger was taken into custody.
The wounded trooper was transferred to University of Chicago Medical Center for surgery and is in stable condition as of 8 a.m. ET, expected to make a full recovery; the two sheriff's deputies were evaluated at a hospital and placed on paid administrative leave per department policy.
Authorities warned of extended lane closures on I-80/94 Tuesday morning with nearly three-mile traffic impacts as Indiana State Police led the investigation, marking the second officer-involved shooting in less than a week after a LaPorte County Sheriff's deputy was critically injured Friday at Franciscan Health in Michigan City.
