The State Comptroller’s Office will begin payments Tuesday, and more than $43.8 million will go to local governments.
- On Tuesday, the Indiana State Board of Finance unanimously approved more than $130 million in reimbursements to cover revenue lost during June due to the gasoline tax holiday.
- Braun suspended the Gasoline Excise Tax and the Gas Use Tax in April to provide relief at the pump, requiring the state to replace resulting road funding shortfalls.
- Of the latest transfer, over $43.8 million will go directly to counties, cities, and towns, bringing total approved reimbursements to more than $250 million including payments for April and May.
- The State Comptroller will distribute payments starting this week, aiming for completion by November 1, though some Democrats criticized the move as legally dubious.
- An emergency declaration on August 5 allows Braun to keep the tax suspension in place for another 120 days, requiring the state to continue authorizing future reimbursements.

Gas Tax Reimbursements Approved
(Indianapolis, IN) – Indiana counties, cities and towns will receive gas tax reimbursements after the State Board of Finance unanimously approved the reimbursements. “I made a commitment that we would provide gas tax relief to Hoosiers without leaving our local communities to foot the bill. I’m grateful to the Board of Finance for their partnership in once again helping us keep that promise,” said Gov. Mike Braun. “Right now, local leaders across Indiana are focused on cleaning up from historic storms, repairing damaged infrastructure and helping their neighbors recover, and they can continue to direct their efforts there.” The approval comes at an important time as communities across the state recover from last week’s historic severe weather and flooding. The State Board of Finance unanimously approved $130,450,219.60 in reimbursements for the period of June 1 through June 30, following its unanimous approval last month of reimbursements for April and May. The Indiana State Comptroller’s Office will distribute $43,805,267.02 to counties, cities and towns over the next week.
