Indiana expands property tax relief for disabled veterans
The law also creates new credits for other disabled veterans and removes a $240,000 home-value cap, broadening eligibility statewide.
- On Wednesday, Indiana Governor Mike Braun ceremonially signed legislation exempting homes owned by 100% disabled veterans from property taxes entirely, eliminating their tax burden.
- The law repeals a provision that limited property tax credit eligibility to homes assessed below $240,000. Jason Black, state adjutant for Disabled American Veterans Indiana Department, called this repeal the most impactful change.
- Partially disabled wartime veterans qualify for a $350 credit on property taxes, while those aged 62 and older receive $250. Governor Braun said, "Someone who is totally disabled, I thought this was a no brainer."
- Ron Patterson, commander of American Legion Indiana Department, said the relief helps veterans struggling with groceries and daily expenses. Veterans must refile homestead claims with their county for relief taking effect on 2027 tax bills.
- Braun plans continued property tax reform during the next legislative session, proposing to exempt two-thirds of all Hoosier homes from property taxes over the next five years.
