- On Thursday, the Consumer Affairs Ministry notified the Legal Metrology Indian Standard Time Rules, establishing Indian Standard Time as the mandatory common time reference for official, legal, and commercial purposes across India.
- Inconsistencies between current time sources prompted the Ministry to mandate this uniform standard, as critical infrastructure including banking, telecommunications, and power grids require synchronized digital time-stamping for reliable operation.
- To support this initiative, the government commissioned a White Rabbit Technology-based IST Dissemination Demonstration Network at RRSL Bengaluru, while authorizing the use of NavIC and other approved timing sources for secure dissemination.
- Collaborating with CSIR-NPL, the Indian Space Research Organisation, the National Stock Exchange, and BSNL, the Ministry demonstrated secure time transmission between RRSL Bengaluru and NSE Chennai to validate the system's viability.
- These Rules take effect 180 days after publication in the Official Gazette, providing a transition period for government departments, businesses, and institutions to assess existing systems and perform necessary technical modifications.
