Indian Navy Safely Recovers Missile Warhead From Oil Tanker
The warhead was extracted after specialists used advanced diagnostics and a phased response to protect the ship, crew and port infrastructure, officials said.
- On Thursday, the Indian Navy completed a complex operation to recover an unexploded missile warhead from the Marshall Islands-flagged tanker Olympic Life off the Kerala coast. The vessel had reported a hull explosion while transiting from the UAE to Kochi.
- Following an alert received through the Information Fusion Centre Indian Ocean Region, the Indian Navy launched a coordinated response after the tanker reported a hull explosion off the coast of Oman on May 26. The vessel continued its voyage toward Kochi despite the damage.
- Specialist Explosive Ordnance Disposal team members from the Kochi-based Southern Naval Command assessed the situation and confirmed a projectile had penetrated the hull and lodged inside a fuel tank, creating significant safety risk for the vessel and crew.
- Following prescribed safety procedures, the EOD team safely extracted the warhead and debris using advanced diagnostic methods to isolate the detonation mechanism. The Navy transported the recovered ordnance to a "secure facility for safe stowage and detailed examination."
- Officials described the mission as one of the most technically challenging explosive ordnance disposal operations in recent times. The operation demonstrated the Navy's technical expertise and effective inter-agency coordination in addressing complex maritime emergencies.
