Indian Farmers Plan Nationwide Protests Over US Trade Deal Concerns
Farmers and trade unions protest an interim India-US trade deal fearing tariff cuts on some U.S. agricultural imports could threaten millions of smallholder livelihoods, organizers said.
- On Wednesday, Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal said negotiators could finalise and sign the trade deal's first tranche by the end of March, adding the joint statement must be converted into a legal agreement that can take time.
- Reciprocal tariff changes mean the pact will lower tariffs on Indian goods from 25% to 18%, following Washington's rollback of additional 25% tariffs imposed on August 27 last year.
- Suresh Nair said the interim deal should lower retail prices for premium nuts, fruits, and soybean oil by reducing tariffs on US industrial goods and American food and agricultural products.
- Sector-Specific concessions include a reciprocal tariff rate 18% on textiles and apparel, leather and footwear, certain machinery, and removal of tariffs on aircraft and aircraft parts.
- Longer-Term, analysts flag that Ajay Srivastava warned tariff cuts on some US farm imports may hurt Indian farmers, while eliminating tariffs on electronic components, smartphones, and solar panels could harm domestic manufacturing amid India’s $500 billion US energy purchases.
