Indian AI Startups Should Work Towards Global Leadership: PM Modi

On January 8, 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a roundtable in New Delhi with 12 Indian AI start-ups qualified for the AI for ALL: Global Impact Challenge ahead of the India AI Impact Summit 2026 next month.
Modi highlighted AI's societal role and India's vast innovation capacity, urging Indian AI models to be ethical, unbiased, transparent, based on data-privacy principles, and to promote regional languages, saying `Made in India, Made for the World`.
Demonstrating breadth, the start-ups presented work spanning Indian language models, multilingual LLMs, speech-to-text, audio, video, 3D content, with attendees including Avataar, BharatGen, Fractal, Gan, Genloop, Gnani, Intellihealth, Sarvam, Shodh AI, Soket AI, Tech Mahindra and Zenteiq.
Modi told participants to aim for global leadership by promoting affordable, inclusive AI and frugal innovation while leaders said India's enabling environment and the world's trust in India are key strengths.
Start-Ups praised India's strong commitment to advancing the AI ecosystem, and participants said rapid sector growth suggests the centre of gravity of AI innovation is shifting towards India.
