India Working to Run Hydrogen Train at up to 110 Kmph: Railway Board Chief
The 10-coach train has logged more than 2,500 km in service as Indian Railways reviews fuel supply and route options.
- On Sunday, Railway Board Chairman and CEO Satish Kumar announced in Indore that Indian Railways is working to operate the hydrogen train at speeds up to 110 kmph after completing trials at 120 kmph.
- The Hydrogen Fuel Cell Trainset, flagged off in July, currently operates at 75 kmph on its 89 km maiden route between Jind Junction and Sonipat, having clocked more than 2,500 km of commercial operations.
- Unlike conventional electric trains, the 10-coach train generates electricity via hydrogen fuel cells, producing only water vapor and heat while carrying around 2,600 passengers without combustion or emissions.
- Consultations are underway with stakeholders to determine which rail sections the hydrogen train could operate on, while technical aspects and fuel-supply arrangements are being examined.
- The Railways also plans to launch 11 more Vande Bharat sleeper trains this year and is preparing 100 to 125 special trains for the upcoming Simhastha festival in Ujjain.
