India GM Praggnanandhaa Beats Javokhir Sindarov at Sinquefield Cup
Praggnanandhaa converted a late blunder on move 82 and joined Fabiano Caruana atop the standings with 1.5 points after two rounds.
On Wednesday, Indian Grandmaster Praggnanandhaa defeated Javokhir Sindarov in the second round of the Sinquefield Cup, moving into a share of the early lead in the $475,000 prize tournament.
After a queen-pawn opening, the match remained balanced and appeared headed for a draw. However, Praggnanandhaa pressed for advantage, eventually finding a way through the Uzbek Grandmaster's defenses.
Converting a drawn position after 95 moves, Praggnanandhaa dominated the endgame. Sindarov blundered on the 82nd move, allowing the Indian accurate responses before the Uzbek player resigned 13 moves later.
Five leaders now share the top spot with 1.5 points each after two rounds. Overnight leader Fabiano Caruana of the United States drew against Anish Giri of the Netherlands.
Sindarov, set to face world champion Gukesh later this year for the world crown, had appeared to have secured a comfortable position before his late-game blunder cost him the match.
