India Day Festival in Dublin Postponed over Safety Fears
COUNTY DUBLIN, IRELAND, AUG 11 – The festival was postponed after multiple assaults and racist incidents raised safety concerns for the Indian community, marking the first disruption since 2015, officials said.
- The Ireland India Council postponed Sunday’s India Day at Farmleigh House in Dublin’s Phoenix Park due to safety concerns following recent violent attacks on the community.
- Since the Dublin riots in November 2023, attacks have risen, including a gang assault in Tallaght and an attack on an Indian taxi driver in Dublin, last month.
- The Ireland India Council consulted widely, including with gardaí, before Shukla called the decision to postpone 'very difficult' and 'emotional'.
- The Tánaiste urged gardaí to investigate each assault 'with vigour' and praised Indian people's contributions to Irish society.
- Prashant Shukla said a new date will be scheduled only when attacks subside, possibly in September or October, after the Indian Embassy in Dublin earlier this month warned citizens to avoid deserted areas.
