India classed high risk for doping in track and field, Botswana athletes face stricter testing
India will face stricter minimum testing after producing the most positive track and field doping tests since 2024, the Athletics Integrity Unit said.
- On Monday, the Athletics Integrity Unit downgraded the Athletics Federation of India from Category B to Category A under Rule 15, classifying India as an "extremely high" risk for doping.
- India ranked in the top two for Anti-Doping Rule Violations between 2022 and 2025, recording 71 violations in 2024 alone, prompting the board's decision.
- Investigators also imposed stricter testing on athletes from Botswana, Cuba, and Peru as second-tier risks; Botswana runners face increased screening before hosting the World Relays in Gaborone next month.
- Athletics Federation of India spokesperson Adille Sumariwalla stated the government is moving toward criminalizing doping, emphasizing "There has to be a strong deterrent" against substance distribution.
