Tuition fees in England and Wales rise to £9,535
ENGLAND AND WALES, AUG 1 – The first tuition fee rise since 2017 increases undergraduate costs by £285, with maintenance loans also raised to help students manage higher living expenses, including rising rents.
- Following a review, the Department for Education declared in November 2024 that undergraduate tuition fees in England and Wales will rise to 9,535, a 285 or 3% increase.
- Universities have warned of mounting financial pressures as high inflation diminished fee value, and the Office for Students warned that over four in 10 universities expect a deficit by summer 2025.
- In tandem with fee increases, maintenance loans were raised, allowing students outside London to borrow up to 10,544, up from 10,227.
- Students could see graduates in England carrying debts averaging around £53,000 when repayments begin, amid rising costs and potential course cuts.
- The government plans to outline long-term funding solutions as effective support systems are needed for students in the UK facing rising costs.
