Thousands evacuated, as fires continue to rage across southern Europe
Wildfires continue to rage across southern Europe, forcing thousands of people to evacuate their homes. In Spain, a third volunteer firefighter has died from severe burns, and as residents across the continent grapple with the loss of homes and possessions, the E-U has sent assistance to Greece, Spain, Bulgaria, Montenegro and Albania.
Forest fires in southern Europe continue to devastate large areas of land and the EU says it is working "non-stop" to support fire-ravaged countries. In Spain, a total of 30 people have been arrested on suspicion of starting forest fires.
It is hot and dry in the south of Europe. In Greece, Italy and Albania the fire brigades fight with forest fires. The situation is tense.
Several countries are still fighting violent fires, favored by an intense and prolonged heat wave, combined with severe drought.
In Cyprus, the weather service warns against extreme heat. In Spain, a larger area has been burned this year than in the whole of last year. In Greece, the situation relaxes slightly.
Greece and many other southern European countries are currently fighting heavy forest fires. Heavy winds have been making extinguishing work difficult for days.
