Island Charities Call for Donations to Help B.C. Wildfire Evacuees

The temple and local donors have provided hundreds of free meals and supplies as thousands remain displaced and damage assessments continue.

  • Following the evacuation of Summerland last Saturday, the Penticton Sikh Temple has mobilized to feed thousands of displaced residents, serving nearly 2,000 meals daily to those seeking shelter in Penticton.
  • The Bald Range wildfire, now over 19,000 hectares, remains out of control as of Friday morning. More than 6,000 properties across the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen, Summerland, and the Penticton Indian Band remain under evacuation orders.
  • Jarnail Gill, a temple organizer, coordinated donations from regional farmers to supply fresh produce for the relief effort. Residents are encouraged to drop off essential items at the OneSky Emergency Donation Centre on Duncan Ave.
  • Premier David Eby and MLA Amelia Boultbee visited the temple Wednesday evening, with Eby offering his "heartfelt thanks" for the support. Boultbee said the evacuations have been "incredibly upsetting" but community response is a source of pride.
  • Officials are assessing tree dangers and hydro lines to determine when residents can return home, while Chief Greg Gabriel continues urging the province to establish alternative emergency routes. Highway 97 remains restricted to 7 a.m.–7 p.m. access.
