At UNGA, India Launches Maritime Safety Group to Protect Ships and Seafarers
India and Liberia formed a new shipping safety group as Jaishankar said attacks on seafarers and commercial vessels are no longer exceptional.
- On Friday, External Affairs Minister Jaishankar and Liberia announced establishing a "Group of friends" on the safety and security of shipping and seafarers on the sidelines of the 81st General Assembly.
- Merchant shipping faces increased risks in regions including the Strait of Hormuz, Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Bab-el-Mandeb, and Somalia; Jaishankar noted attacks against seafarers are "regrettably" no longer exceptional.
- Jaishankar added that commercial shipping and marinas have been subjected to repeated attacks in the Gulf and the Red Sea, calling these actions "simply indefensible" for disrupting maritime commerce.
- Following the remarks, a Pakistani journalist shouted a question to Jaishankar; Permanent Representative Harish Parvathaneni told the journalist, "You have heard your reply."
- On Thursday, an Indian journalist had asked Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, "When will you stop harbouring terrorists?" as he entered the building, preceding the tense exchange.
