Major Burger Chain In-N-Out Changes Two Key Ingredients, Sending Fans Into a Frenzy
The burger chain said the bun change reduces allergy risk and follows earlier recipe updates, including sea salt packets and real-sugar ketchup.
On Tuesday, In-N-Out Burger announced it removed sesame flour from hamburger buns across its 10 states and replaced iodized salt packets with sea salt, citing commitment to serving the "freshest, highest-quality food possible."
These ingredient modifications follow previous updates, including the 2025 transition to ketchup made with real sugar and removal of artificial coloring from strawberry milkshakes and Signature Pink Lemonade as part of the company's long-term quality strategy.
The removal of sesame flour reverses a 2024 decision to add the ingredient as a safeguard against cross-contamination after the federal FASTER Act designated sesame a major food allergen, though In-N-Out did not confirm if the change addresses allergy concerns.
Some customers and social media influencers continue to urge In-N-Out to switch from vegetable oils to beef tallow, a rendered fat historically used for frying, amid these ongoing ingredient modifications.
The burger chain plans to relocate its headquarters from Irvine to Baldwin Park while opening an eastern hub near Nashville by 2029, supporting operations across over 430 locations.
