Saab, Helsing Let Gripen Fighter Fly with AI in Charge

  • Saab and Helsing successfully completed three test flights of the Gripen E fighter jet integrated with Helsing's AI agent Centaur by June 11, 2025 over the Baltic Sea.
  • The collaboration began last year following Saab's 75 million investment in Helsing and aimed to enhance Gripen E capabilities with fast AI integration within six months.
  • During the tests, Centaur autonomously controlled complex beyond visual range maneuvers, cued missile firing, and faced off against a manned Gripen D using real-time sensor data.
  • Peter Nilsson highlighted that this milestone reflects Saab’s advanced technological capabilities in applying AI to aviation, while Antoine Bordes emphasized that the AI completed hours of testing equivalent to approximately five decades of pilot experience within a much shorter timeframe.
  • These test flights represent a significant advancement in autonomous air combat technology and support the development of Sweden’s next-generation fighter program, with ongoing AI training and additional evaluations fully backed by the Swedish Defence Material Administration.
