Paris Pride March Rescheduled Due to Intense Heatwave
Emergency wards were dangerously overcrowded as France’s record June heatwave drove a fourfold rise in heat-related emergency visits, authorities said.
- On Friday, Paris authorities banned public alcohol consumption and ordered cancellation of major weekend events including the Paris Pride March, Solidays festival, and athletics meeting due to strain on emergency services from record-breaking heatwave.
- After France recorded its hottest day since 1947 on Wednesday with average temperatures reaching 30C, Paris police chief Patrice Faure warned Thursday that hospitals are "reaching a saturation point" with hospitalisations continuing to increase.
- Emergency services at Hôpital européen Georges Pompidou face "extremely serious" pressure with 53 patients in 20 beds and corridors full, while drowning deaths rose to 55, prompting Sports Minister Marina Ferrari to warn "the situation may worsen."
- The Paris Pride March, typically drawing tens of thousands, has been postponed until September, with Inter-LGBT co-president Anouk Veyret stating "the whole team needs to meet to see how we can bounce back." Solidays and Stade Charlety athletics meeting were also cancelled.
- To address future heatwaves, EDF and lenders pledged €130 million for cooling systems in French schools, with €80 million from EDF funding more than 100,000 equipment items across more than 10,000 establishments by end of September.
