In a tiny European statelet, a Putin ally is running out of road
REPUBLIKA SRPSKA, BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA, AUG 9 – Milorad Dodik was convicted for defying the High Representative and faces a six-year office ban, triggering early elections within 90 days, officials said.
- On Wednesday, Bosnia’s electoral commission applied the law that automatically removes officials sentenced to more than six months in jail, stripping Milorad Dodik of his post as Republika Srpska president; the removal takes effect after the appeals period.
- Last week, an appeals court upheld the decision against Dodik, which will take effect after the appeals period expires, following his defiance of Christian Schmidt earlier this year.
- Although Dodik avoided prison by paying a fine, early elections must be called within 90 days.
- Serbia’s Foreign Minister Marko Djurić denounced it as a 'political witch hunt' amid international reactions to Dodik's legal issues.
- Amid calls for new elections, Jasmin Mujanović warned Bosnian authorities face a 'major test' if Dodik attempts to stay in power, and Arminka Helić warned he could pursue full secession.
