Manipur: Bus Service to Guwahati Resumes After 3 Years

The route restarted with 125 passengers after ethnic unrest and highway blockades halted service for more than three years, officials said.

  • On Friday, August 21, public transport services along National Highway-2 resumed between Imphal and Guwahati after a three-year gap, carrying 125 passengers in two buses and five tempo travelers.
  • Ethnic conflict between tribal Kuki-Zo and non-tribal Meitei communities suspended the service on May 3, 2023, after blockades by various groups barred movement across the highway for three years.
  • Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh announced the reopening of national highways on August 8 during a Kangpokpi visit with Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen and Saitu MLA Haokholet Kipgen.
  • Vehicles traversed Kuki-majority Kangpokpi and Naga-majority Senapati districts without incident. Passenger Kiyam Kumarjit Singh expressed gratitude, hoping the resumption would usher in "love, peace and harmony" among communities.
  • Passenger Nivedita Chanu from Imphal East said the lifting of blockades augured well for Manipur. Officials view restoration of this crucial link as vital to the State Government's ongoing efforts to rebuild normalcy.
